Manage Stakeholder Expectations

Watch this chapter (3:34)

  • Communicate progress and setbacks transparently
  • Manage the gap between promised and delivered value
  • Address expectation drift before it becomes a conflict

Alignment (task 5) is the one-time negotiation; managing expectations (task 6) is the ongoing discipline of keeping that agreement honest as reality changes. Scope slips, dates move, budgets tighten — the PM's job is to surface that early and renegotiate, not to let the gap grow silently until a stakeholder is blindsided at delivery.

Exam scenarios often test the instinct to hide bad news "until it's resolved." That is consistently the wrong answer. PMI's expected behavior is proactive, honest communication the moment a material change to expectations becomes likely — even before it's fully confirmed.

Study focus: this is where "manage stakeholder engagement" (an Executing-process-group activity in the process model) and the people-domain skill of expectation management overlap — know that they reinforce the same behavior from two different angles of the exam content.
