Align Stakeholder Expectations

Watch this chapter (4:59)

  • Surface unstated assumptions early
  • Reconcile competing stakeholder needs
  • Negotiate a shared definition of acceptable outcomes

Two stakeholders can both be "satisfied" with the charter and still expect completely different things at delivery — that gap is what this task exists to close. The tool is early, structured elicitation: interviews, workshops, and a documented assumption log, not a single kickoff meeting.

Where this gets tested: a scenario shows conflicting requirements from two departments. The correct move is facilitated negotiation toward a documented, shared outcome — escalating to the sponsor to "pick a winner" is usually a later resort, not a first move, unless the negotiation genuinely stalls.

Study focus: RACI (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed) charts are a favorite way PMI tests whether you understand who actually needs to agree on an expectation versus who just needs to hear about it.
