Aligning the Solution With Organizational Goals

  • Collaborate in the development of project goals and objectives
  • Provide clarification of business needs and solution scope
  • Align the product with the organization's goals and objectives

A BA doesn't set project goals and objectives alone — that's a collaborative effort with the project manager and sponsor — but the BA's specific contribution is making sure those goals stay grounded in the actual business need and solution scope already established. Without that grounding, goals and objectives can drift into generic statements that sound reasonable but don't actually trace back to the problem the initiative was meant to solve.

Checking alignment means regularly asking whether the product being planned still maps to the organization's broader goals, not just the initiative's own stated objectives — a technically successful project can still miss the mark if it solves a narrower problem than the one the organization actually needed addressed.

Study focus: a scenario where a project's objectives have quietly narrowed in scope from the original business need, with no one noticing the drift, is testing this task — the BA's job is to catch and flag that kind of misalignment before it compounds.
