Remove Impediments, Obstacles, and Blockers

  • Proactively identify and prioritize impediments
  • Distinguish issues the team can resolve from those requiring PM/organizational intervention
  • Track resolution and confirm the blocker is actually cleared

This task sits at the intersection of People and Business Environment: impediments are often organizational (a missing approval, a budget freeze, an unavailable shared resource) rather than purely team-level. The PM's role is to shield the team from these organizational-level blockers so they can keep delivering.

PMI expects a triage instinct: can the team resolve this themselves (leave it with them), does it need the PM's organizational authority (the PM acts), or does it need executive intervention (escalate)? A common wrong answer is the PM personally solving every blocker rather than empowering the team to resolve what's within their control.

Study focus: "impediment" is deliberately broad in the ECO — it isn't only an agile/Scrum term, and non-agile scenario questions test it just as often as sprint-based ones.
