Using the Business Case for Context
- Review the business case, project goals, and objectives
- Provide context for business analysis activities
Before planning any business analysis activity in detail, a BA reviews the business case and the project's goals and objectives — not to redo Needs Assessment work, but to make sure every planning decision that follows (how requirements will be gathered, who's involved, how changes get handled) is actually grounded in why the project exists in the first place. Planning done without this context risks building an elaborate process for the wrong problem.
This review also sets realistic boundaries on the BA's own planned activities — a business case justifying a small, low-risk initiative doesn't need the same heavyweight traceability and change-control apparatus a large, multi-stakeholder initiative would.
Study focus: a scenario where a BA builds an elaborate, formal requirements process for a tiny, low-risk initiative (or the reverse — a thin process for a large, high-risk one) is testing whether the planning was actually scaled to the business case's context.
