Updating Requirement Status

  • Communicate with appropriate stakeholders as a requirement moves through lifecycle states
  • Record changes in the traceability artifact or tool
  • Track requirements toward closure

As a requirement moves through its lifecycle states — elicited, analyzed, approved, built, tested, delivered — this task keeps that movement both communicated to the relevant stakeholders and recorded in the traceability tool, so the official record and the actual, lived reality stay in sync. A requirement whose real status differs from its recorded status defeats the entire purpose of tracking it.

Tracking toward closure means every requirement should eventually land on a definite, final state — delivered and verified, or formally withdrawn — rather than lingering indefinitely in an ambiguous "in progress" limbo that nobody ever resolves.

Study focus: a scenario where a requirement has sat in "in progress" for months with no stakeholder communication or status update is testing a breakdown in this specific task, not just a general project delay.
