The PMP Examination Content Outline, or ECO, is PMI's official list of what the exam tests. Every question maps to one of its tasks. If you understand the outline, you know exactly what to study and how much time each area deserves. Here is the 2026 version in plain words.

The three domains

DomainWeightAbout how many questionsTasks
People33%598
Process41%7410
Business Environment26%478

People (33%): leading the humans

Developing a common vision, managing conflict, leading the team, engaging and aligning stakeholders, managing their expectations, making sure knowledge is passed on, and planning communication. These questions reward the servant-leader: listen first, coach rather than command, solve problems with the team before escalating.

Process (41%): planning and running the work

The integrated plan and delivery approach, scope, value-based delivery, resources, procurement, finance, quality, schedule, evaluating project status and closing the project. Expect calculations here: earned value, critical path and float, three-point estimates and contract incentive fees.

Useful guides: earned value, critical path and float, contract types.

Business Environment (26%): the organisation around the project

Governance, compliance, managing and controlling changes, removing impediments, risk, continuous improvement, supporting organisational change, and responding to changes outside the project. This domain grew the most in 2026, so don't treat it as an afterthought.

Useful guides: integrated change control, risk vs issue.

How to use the outline to plan your study

  1. Split your time roughly by weight. About a third on People, two fifths on Process, a quarter on Business Environment.
  2. Study task by task. For each task, ask: what would a good project manager do first here, and what would PMI call the wrong move?
  3. Track scores by domain. A total score hides weak spots. A domain score shows them.

Study each task for free

Adnan Khalid Prep has one free chapter per ECO task: 26 chapters, each with slides, a worked example, a short video and practice questions. When you're ready, the free 180-question mock scores you by domain, so you can see which part of the outline to revisit.

The task names and weights come from PMI's published outline. Always check PMI's website for the latest version.
